Rugby has a peculiar way of connecting people. I recently took on a few B.com subjects and made an appointment with a lecturer as I was unsure as to the workings of my new subjects. Low and behold, he is not only a lecturer but the chairperson of the Sharks Supporters Club Pretoria.
Established in 2009, the club is a satellite of Gauteng Central and provides Pretoria based Sharks supporters with a home away from home. It was not easy starting the club in the middle of Bulls country but Paul Smit stuck to his guns until the Kwa Zulu Natal Rugby Union gave in.
The club is fortunate to have two homes with Oxfords Old English Club in Hatfield Square catering for the younger generation and a club house at Harlequins Rugby Club in Groenkloof which is more family friendly.
The club holds a variety of activities such as organised bus trips to Sharks matches in Durban, Johannesburg and Witbank as well as competitions where members can win Sharks gear. The club organised the Flasher Girls to entertain members and fans at Hatfield Square before the Blue Bulls vs Sharks clash on the 25th of August. This event was hugely successful.
